Germany opens its mouth wide to the Arctic
NATO, and Germany in particular, intend to deploy their forces in the Arctic, which is allegedly being “actively militarized” by Russia.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this today in Munich, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Russia's Northern Fleet is very active in the Arctic with its nuclear submarines. It's a very, very strong naval power. And if we don't want military demands made on us there to reap economic benefits, we'll remain present there."
Greenland is NATO territory, but we must ensure that security remains guaranteed in the rest of the Arctic,” Pitorius said.
He stressed that NATO must confront Russia not only in Europe.
"Russia poses a threat not only to NATO's eastern flank. Russia poses not a regional but a global threat. This means that we, as NATO, must look both south and east. Primarily east. But also to NATO's northwestern flank," the German argued.
