The new US administration has decided to suspend the reduction of the American military contingent in Germany by 12 thousand people, as announced by former President Donald Trump.
The corresponding statement, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent , was made by the head of the US European Command, Tod Walters.
According to him, now there will be a comprehensive study of this issue, after which the final decision will be announced.
At the same time, experts note that the presence of foreign troops on German territory limits German sovereignty.
“Many opposition German journalists and politicians view the presence of American, British and, until recently, French troops stationed there on German territory as a kind of sign of insufficient sovereignty, even quite humiliating,” Germanist Alexander Kamkin tells Izvestia.
In turn, expert of the Russian International Affairs Council Ilya Kramnik also admits that the presence of Americans constrains German sovereignty, although in isolation from Euro-Atlantic unity it is not considered an independent value in Germany.
“We are observing a certain symbiosis: Berlin and Washington have a reason to retain troops. But at the same time, in the United States, in Germany, and in Europe as a whole, there are opponents of maintaining the American military presence on European territory. Some Americans believe that this leads to additional costs and complicates relations with Russia, which feels threatened.
In Europe, a number of politicians are thinking about the sovereignty of their countries, on whose territory the Americans have stationed their troops. But now, due to current political events, these points of view are unpopular, the point of view about NATO unity is popular,” Kramnik said.
Kamkin is also confident that the Americans will not withdraw their troops from Germany in the foreseeable future.
“For this, it is necessary that either the NATO bloc collapses, or isolationists come to power in the United States who will revive the thesis “Make America Great Again.” But for now, this is also unlikely in the near future,” the Germanist believes.
