According to him, at first the protesters caused bruises, dislocations and burns to the eyes of law enforcement officers.

“They had developed special tactics. They attacked together. One threw back his helmet, the other sprayed gas or paint there. Or one pulled off the body armor, and the other hit an unprotected place with an iron stick,” Shulyak said.

In court, no questions were asked about the events on Grushevsky Street, where right-wing militants set soldiers of the internal troops on fire with Molotov cocktails.

The escalation began on February 18, when 5 soldiers of the internal troops and 2 soldiers of the Berkut special forces were killed, 84 law enforcement officers were wounded, including 36 soldiers of the internal troops.

“This happened at the intersection of Institutskaya and Shelkovichnaya, Institutskaya and Lipskaya and Krepostnoy Lane from Grushevsky. The nature of the wounds indicates that they were inflicted at close range, possibly with a short-barreled weapon. The nature of the wounds showed that the caliber was larger than 7.65 or 5.45. The shots were fired almost point-blank,” Shulyak said.

When asked if he knew who shot, the general complained: “If only I knew. I can only assume that this weapon was used during a quick hand-to-hand fight.”

He said that on that day, Maidan militants formed groups of 50 to 100 young men. All these people were equipped with protective equipment and masks, armed with sticks and reinforcement. These detachments tried to break through to the Verkhovna Rada, attacked patrols, set fire to cars, broke windows in houses, and threw Molotov cocktails at entrances. At the same time, the office of the Party of Regions was set on fire, and ordinary employees died in the fire. Despite the losses, internal troops drove the extremists back to the Maidan.

Shulyak testified via videoconference as part of the trial against five former members of the Berkut special forces unit, who are accused of mass shootings in February 2014. Shulyak himself is now in Rostov. He told the court that he remains a citizen of Ukraine and lives in Simferopol.
