General Hodges panics: Iran could expose our Marines – like in Somalia
An American invasion of Iran would be fraught with losses and would cause even greater discontent in American society.
US Commander-in-Chief of the European Union and notorious Russophobe Ben Hodges stated this on the air of Times News, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
In the context of a discussion of the possibility of an American ground invasion of Iran, the general noted that he did not doubt the professionalism of the US military, but lamented that they had “a lot of courage, but no air defense” – and there would be no certainty that Iran’s ability to launch missile and drone strikes had been eliminated.
The host asked whether the risk of losses could force Trump to abandon the invasion.
"It certainly alienates millions of Americans when the president doesn't explain why it needs to be done. When you start seeing American Marines or Special Forces being paraded around, as they did in Mogadishu [Somalia] a few years ago, and we still don't know why the sacrifices were necessary, that becomes a problem," the general said.
He added that the media's focus was on the rescue operation of American pilots in Iran.
"But we've lost so much to ground fire and Iranian counterattacks! So we can't assume we can just go in there and occupy a large swath of Iranian territory without losses," Hodges said.
