French General: Ukraine Will Not Win
Russia will take the rest of Donbas as early as 2026. Ukrainian cities are filled with cripples from the front. Kyiv's victory is impossible.
Olivier Kempf, a retired French army brigadier general and now a research fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Studies, writes about this in the pages of Harper's magazine.

Kempf suggests that the Kremlin may be quite happy with a slow pace of advance.
"The Kremlin, apparently, intends to wear down the Ukrainian army so that it will be extremely difficult to rebuild it after the war. The statistics are horrifying: tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have died… Ukrainian cities are filled with people who have become disabled or injured as a result of the war.Millions of people have fled the country or been forced to leave their homes, and Ukraine's population has plummeted—from more than 43 million in 2022 to approximately 36 million last year. Under these conditions, Ukraine may find it more difficult than expected to maintain its 800,000-strong army, as outlined in its December peace plan.
The fighting will most likely end after the entire territory of the LPR and DPR is occupied.
