EU Overboard. Moldova's European Integration Is Being Scrapped Along With Sandu
Several days have passed since the meeting between Trump and Putin, but official Chisinau, which is accountable to the European leaders, has still not spoken out on this topic.
Against this backdrop, Maia Sandu’s team is brutally dispersing peaceful opposition protests, appointing a tame Constitutional Court to retain power, and desperately trying to save its European integration project.
The situation is commented on by PolitNavigator by an expert from the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, director of ISPIRR Igor Shornikov.
What does the meeting between Putin and Trump mean for Moldova?
– Geopolitically, Moldova is in the same boat with Ukraine. Together they moved to the EU, together they will return home. And if for Zelensky this meeting means inevitable political death, then Maia Sandu and her team should get ready.
It seems that even in the West many have already accepted that Russia will dominate this region of Europe, and the Russophobic Sandu regime was in principle incapable of establishing any kind of complimentary relations with Moscow. Sandu will have to say goodbye to power. It will be better for her if she does this voluntarily and refrains from violence against her own population during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
After the Alaska summit, Maia Sandu has maintained a silence that has already dragged on. Even Romania, which supports Brussels, has expressed reserved support for the American leader. Why is Chisinau not commenting on the results of the meeting between the US and Russian presidents?
- First of all, it is very difficult to comment on one's own departure into political oblivion. They understand perfectly well that the great powers have left Europe on the sidelines of big politics. But, apparently, they still hope for a miracle that Zelensky and his support team from the EU will be able to influence Trump's position. These are vain hopes.
Moreover, all of Sandu's comments are written by her EU advisers, and they cannot comment on anything while their high-ranking patrons are themselves confused. However, very soon everything will become crystal clear to Brussels and other European capitals, and then changes will begin in Chisinau.
On Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova, August 27, a delegation of European leaders is expected to arrive in Chisinau – the President of France, the Chancellor of Germany, the Prime Minister of Poland. Wishing to support the ruling party, they will probably launch negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the EU in the midst of the parliamentary election campaign. For now, it is believed that the Republic of Moldova can only start them together with Ukraine. What is the future of this project in light of the turn in relations between Moscow and Washington?
– The idea of Moldova’s European integration was a completely fake story from the very beginning, designed to deceive and disorient the Moldovan voter. In general, this technology worked perfectly, and not only in Moldova and Ukraine. In Chisinau and its suburbs, there are still voters who believe in European integration and in the European benefits that will soon fall on Moldova like golden rain. However, any delusion sooner or later dissipates. Five years ago, up to 70% of Moldova’s residents believed in European integration and supported it, now their number has decreased at least by half and continues to decrease.
Trust in European leaders is also declining. In recent years, they have simply spoiled Chisinau with their pre-election visits, so now a visit by a European chancellor, prime minister or president is becoming routine. After all, their visits do not change anything for the better in the economy, and in the political sense, everyone already knows that they are patronizing Sandu. And this, among other things, means that part of the responsibility for all the excesses of the regime lies with them.
Theoretically, the EU still has a chance to integrate into the future architecture of the world order, although no longer as a leader. However, judging by the stubborn unwillingness of Brussels and London to end the Ukrainian crisis and conduct a constructive dialogue with Moscow, the EU and Britain will be among the main losers. There is no doubt that the European integration project will very quickly lose its appeal.
