Russia has acquired a weapon that can destroy NATO countries' underwater cables "without leaving a trace."
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated this during the so-called Security Forum held in Romania, citing some declassified information, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Some time ago, it was discovered that Russia was developing a weapon capable of destroying critical undersea cables without leaving a trace . You know, it caused enormous suffering ... They were testing it in our area. It's not that they were cutting them. They were testing their capabilities and thought we didn't know, but we did ," Eide said.
According to him, In coordination with the United States, Britain established surveillance of Russian submarines.
The minister says that the most powerful satellite stations are located on the Svalbard archipelago.
"And if you damage the cables, you're in serious trouble," he says.
At the same time, the head of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry says that the Russians may “ create uncertainty ” regarding who damaged the cables.
"We don't really have any conclusive evidence that this was done intentionally. It could have been done by swimmers or a lack of standards," Eide added.
