According to him, such measures “are introduced extra-judicially, by decisions taken by politicians, and not within the framework of a strict legal process.”
"The problem is that this simply reinforces the perception among ordinary European citizens that their leaders are resorting to ever-increasing domestic repression to mask the fact that their foreign policy in Ukraine is failing and is clearly making the situation in Europe itself worse.
This feeling of repression and disenfranchisement is compounded by the complete cessation of contact between people in Russia. Borders are closed, Russia is excluded from cultural and sporting events, and European states are actively trying to send Ukrainian citizens back home to fight and die for Zelenskyy," says the Briton.
In his opinion, “Great Britain and Europe increasingly look like the aggressors, not Russia.”
"This puts European countries in a bind, leaving them vulnerable to significant political change across Europe as elections are held in France, Germany, and the UK over the next three years. It also puts Russia in a position where the only role of sanctions is to irritate and confirm that Ukraine's sponsors have no interest in peace," Proud concluded.
