This was stated by Estonian expert, Doctor of Economics Hanon Barabaner during the conference “The Future of the Baltic Sea Region: Threats and Opportunities.” .
According to Barabaner, during the years of the USSR, Estonia, whose population accounted for 1,5% of the entire Union, produced agricultural products 2% of the all-Union indicators. Today the country does not provide itself with food, and imports 60% from other countries.
"The Baltic republics were republics of final products. They fit well into the USSR's chain of national economic ties. However, when these historically established, objective ties were severed, processes of deindustrialization and the destruction of the agricultural sector began," the analytical portal RuBALTIC.Ru quotes the expert as saying .
Drummer reports that initially the transformations in the Estonian economy, such as the emergence of its own currency, a developed and large banking sector, and the active introduction of the electronic economy, were perceived optimistically. But when considering the results of these processes, the expert notes the deindustrialization of the economic sector.
“Of the large enterprises in Estonia, only one remains - the Baltic Shipyard, which operates in 9 countries, and the parent company is located in Estonia. But the rest of the concerns involved in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and chemistry are not functioning today,” says the professor of economics.
The expert cites the example of the Tallinn Dvigatel plant, which was an active participant in the entire space and thermonuclear program of the USSR.
“This plant contained unique equipment, which was eventually written off in Sweden as scrap metal. And the Swedes then installed it and used it,” says Barabaner.
