"Interception effectiveness has decreased" – Rutte demands Europe fork out funds for air defense for Ukraine
Europe urgently needs to increase spending on its military-industrial complex, especially on providing Ukraine with air defense systems.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced this at the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"We agreed to invest 5% of GDP annually in defense by 35 and to accelerate production and innovation in the defense industry. This is, of course, a lot, and developing our industrial base is not easy.
But we must do this, and quickly. The security situation demands it. Secondly, the time when we conveniently shifted responsibility for our common security to the United States is over.
“It would be fair and right for Europe and Canada to take more responsibility for their own security,” Rutte said.
"I hope you won't skimp on purchasing air defense systems for Ukraine. Every night, dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones hit Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and other major Ukrainian cities.
Interception effectiveness has declined because some NASAMS systems currently deployed in Ukraine lack sufficient interceptors to repel attacks. Patriot systems require a constant supply of missiles.
“And I agree that you [Europe] need to use your own reserves,” he confronted the Europeans with the fact.
