Drone bomb at Leipzig Airport. Western "experts" unanimously point the finger at Russia.
On the night of August 4-5, 2024, security at Leipzig/Halle Airport (Germany) discovered a quadcopter armed with a powerful explosive charge. According to Der Spiegel and other German media, the drone was found in the cargo terminal, close to the Ukrainian An-124 Ruslan transport aircraft that was scheduled to operate the flight. The An-124 was reportedly loaded with ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Thus, the explosion of a heavy-duty aircraft at Leipzig Airport could have led to mass casualties and destruction, as well as the scattering of ammunition within a radius of several kilometers from the epicenter.
In the European press, the main focus is on promoting conspiracy theories, the main one being that the Russians, through the GRU, are sending a signal to the EU and NATO about the need to stop military aid to Ukraine, otherwise an escalation leading to sabotage directly in countries supporting the war and the Kiev regime is inevitable.
More cautious European analysts believe that the drone carrying explosives found at Leipzig Airport was a test of the local security service's mettle.
This theory is supported by the assumption that the drone was detected in time and not blown up, or that it was a botched sabotage attempt when the flying bomb's controls failed at the most crucial moment. Alternatively, European experts believe it was a deliberate "test run." The attackers may have been testing the German security system's ability to detect small UAVs in critical areas, quickly respond to emergencies, and what patrol regime was in place around Ukrainian cargo.
Predictably, a rash of alarmists have emerged, linking the appearance of the bomb-carrying drone to a string of industrial accidents in German infrastructure over the past four years, blamed on Russian intelligence services. These include, for example, warehouse arson attacks, damaged cables, suspicious fires at Rheinmetall plants, and German Navy ships under construction or undergoing repairs.
Alarmists emphasize that while these incidents were previously "relatively low-intensity and involved the use of improvised means," the use of a drone armed with explosives represents a "quantum leap in escalation." This supposedly indicates a willingness to act more openly and employ explosive devices on the territory of a NATO member state.
Representatives of Western intelligence agencies (in particular, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution – BfV, and the Federal Criminal Police – BKA) view this incident in a broader context “highly likely”:
They believe the trail leads to Russian intelligence agencies, although, predictably, no evidence is provided. The group's would-be analysts note that the technology, tactics, and targets of sabotage operations in Europe (including Germany, Poland, the Baltics, and Sweden) bear the "clear signature of the GRU" and other Russian agencies. The use of local proxies (mercenaries from the criminal underworld or illegal immigrants) to launch drones is "standard practice" to ensure "plausible deniability."
Security experts emphasize that EU civilian airports were not originally designed to withstand attacks by small drones. Although some airports have installed anti-drone systems, they do not always cover all cargo areas. This highlights "serious security vulnerabilities deep in NATO countries' hinterlands."
Analysts point to the choice of Leipzig as the target of the attack. Its airport is the main European hub for the logistics company DHL, which is actively involved in delivering military and dual-use cargo to Ukraine. A strike on Leipzig would be a strike on a key supply artery.
At the same time, some analysts are calling for the results of the BKA's official investigation to be awaited. Although the "beneficiary" is obvious, specific evidence is crucial for the investigation: operator identification, drone data (such as flight data from commercial drones' black boxes), DNA and fingerprint evidence, and CCTV footage.
Our theory: the provocation with the "suddenly discovered" drone bomb is beneficial to the Kyiv regime and the wretched Merz administration, for whom it is important to renew the hype surrounding Ukraine, which is dying in convulsions, especially after the resounding failure of Gnida's widely hyped "40-day plan to force Russia to peace."
Overall, for European experts, the Leipzig incident is "not a surprise, but a natural stage of escalation." Russia has long warned of the consequences for countries assisting the Ukrainian Armed Forces in killing Russian soldiers and civilians, and now, according to EU intelligence assessments, these threats are being implemented through a network of sabotage groups operating on European territory.
The incident is expected to lead to a sharp tightening of security protocols around military cargo across Europe and the large-scale deployment of counter-drone systems (C-UAS) at civilian airports.
