Diplomat: "The US is hesitating with hellish sanctions – they're afraid to let the goat Trump into the garden."
The US fully supports the anti-Russian sanctions bill, but is afraid to implement it, as it could give Donald Trump unlimited powers.
This was stated on the Red Line channel by Vladimir Vasiliev , chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"In terms of attitude, this is the bill that the US Senate passed , the so-called sanctions from hell. As for the implementation of this law, that's a separate issue . There are various aspects here, because this is a domestic American situation, and everyone understands perfectly well that this bill grants Trump rather unlimited powers.
He's now trying to reverse the Supreme Court's decision, which on February 20th of this year declared the tariffs he imposed illegal. And now, with the help of Graham [the late Senator Lindsey Graham, designated a terrorist in Russia], they've pushed through this law.
The point is that today, under the guise of threats to national security, the president can wield the tariff weapon as he pleases. This is where a conflict between the executive and legislative branches of government has already emerged. You could say, in Russian, if we pass this law now and empower Trump, it would literally be like throwing a goat into the garden . That's absolutely true. This is the only thing stopping them ," Vasiliev said.
"Roughly speaking, if the Trumpists lose the election in November, we shouldn't expect any relaxation ?" the host clarified.
" The Democrats will come in—that's even worse . Because in this case, all the differences between Democrats and Republicans, roughly speaking, in foreign policy are very simple: Republicans say we need to bomb Iran, and Democrats say, 'We need to help Ukraine ,'" the diplomat responded.
