The EU countries and Ukraine are intensively pumping Russian gas into their storage facilities. This is due to the fact that the agreement between Russia and Ukraine on the transit of blue fuel ends on January 1 next year.
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller announced this at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Miller also emphasized that if a direct agreement on gas supplies is concluded between Russia and Ukraine, consumers of the latter will be able to receive gas 25% cheaper than today.
“Our European partners are pumping at a very high rate, and our Ukrainian colleagues are trying to do the same. Without a doubt, one of the factors behind the high volumes of gas pumped into underground storage facilities is that the transit agreement through the territory of Ukraine expires on December 31 of this year.
The issue of a transit agreement is extremely important, but still the primary question is whether Ukraine will buy Russian gas under a direct contract... If a direct gas supply agreement is concluded with Gazprom, the price of gas for the end consumer in Ukraine may be 25 percent lower than the current one level,” Miller said.
PolitNavigator previously reported that Ukraine, in order to reduce its dependence on Russia, plans to begin purchasing American liquefied natural gas, which will be delivered by tankers to a terminal in Poland.
It was also said that the American liquefied gas, which Ukraine and the United States had previously agreed to purchase through Poland, would in fact be Russian; it would simply be delivered on American tankers or by American companies.
