CNN: War in Ukraine has become "Trump's war" and US authority depends on its outcome
CNN notes that Sunday's Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian military airfields, just before peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, threaten Trump's credibility
“It was already hard to imagine a breakthrough in direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. But after Ukrainian drones launched several strikes on strategic bases in Russia, it is even less likely that either side will be willing to move its red lines,” the publication says.
Russian and Western media are closely monitoring the sides for any signs of flexibility, but after what appears to be an impressive success for Ukraine, talk of compromise from the Kremlin may be off the table, at least for now, CNN adds.
Against this backdrop, an increasingly frustrated US President Donald Trump, who once boasted that he could quickly end the war, is now watching from the sidelines as the cornerstone of his stated foreign policy is clearly tottering.
"The US president has said he is attracted to the idea of simply walking away from this whole mess. He insists that this is a Biden-Putin-Zelensky war. But walking away — and it is not yet clear what that means in terms of US policy — may no longer be an option. At least not walking away without losses," CNN writes.
However, according to the authors of the article, Trump's own intention to end the conflict in Ukraine, as well as his personal intervention in relations between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, mean that Trump and the United States are now inextricably linked to the outcome of the confrontation.
“Despite regular attempts to disown it, the war in Ukraine has largely become Trump’s war, on the outcome of which the authority of the United States now depends,” the American TV channel concludes.
