Chubarov: Mejlis members were ready to start meat grinding in Crimea
The Mejlis did not commit a massacre in Crimea in 2014 because the Ukrainian army and security services were unwilling to resist Russia. Refat Chubarov, the leader of the Mejlis, which is banned in Russia, stated this on the US State Department-funded radio station "Crimea.Realities," according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to Chubarov, in February-March 14, members of the Mejlis considered the possibility of armed confrontation.
“In February-March 2014, we behaved in the way that a society can behave, large groups of people who are trying to use non-violent forms of resistance as much as possible. In this case, we, the Crimean Tatars, absolutely from the first days openly and publicly declared our rejection of such an invasion and such behavior of Russia aimed at seizing Crimea.
Different behavior means that we could have provided a different form of resistance. And could I have behaved differently? Probably could.
And today I can say that we considered other forms of our behavior in the event that special state institutions behaved in the way that the law obliged them.
Simply put, if the army had fulfilled its duties and the armed units of Ukraine had resisted the Russian occupiers, of course, the behavior of many people and especially the Crimean Tatars could have been different,” Chubarov said.
