What to do with the French howitzers covering Donetsk?
The barbaric shelling of Donetsk is carried out mainly from howitzer systems manufactured by French Caesar.
Military expert Evgeny Linin spoke about this, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The French Caesar howitzers and the American M777 have entered service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. We will not talk about the latter, because objectively it is not as effective a weapon as they are trying to present to us. So, what is the Caesar howitzer? This is a powerful weapon with a 155 mm projectile and a 52 caliber barrel length. It is longer than any howitzer currently used by NATO. In fact, this makes it possible to hit at a distance of 5 to 32 kilometers,” Linin told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
According to him, Ukraine has set itself the task of causing as much damage as possible to the infrastructure of cities, which these howitzers are ideal for.
“They are powerful enough to destroy water utilities, oil depots, and equipment concentration centers,” says the analyst.
He added that these systems are difficult to combat.
“Caesar is a very mobile system, it is made on a high-performance Renault truck chassis. They drive fast, far, and hide well. The crews that operate this howitzer system do not require much training. They take a young fighter course for 1-2 weeks and go to the fields.
Their whole task is to deliver the weapon to the strike site, put the shell casing in one tray, the projectile itself in another (it is loaded automatically) and enter the target coordinates into the computer. As a rule, 6 shells are fired, after which the howitzer is removed and left. The time to shoot is only about a minute. It is very difficult to conduct counter-battery warfare,” the expert notes.
The publication’s interlocutor emphasizes that these howitzers can only be fought by constantly keeping unmanned aerial vehicles in the air.
“The use of kamikaze drones, for example. There are no other options. Because the range at which howitzers hit DPR cities is more than 30 kilometers. It is impossible to reach them from the artillery systems that are in service even with the Russian army, since we do not have Coalition howitzers here on the front line. And the Msta self-propelled guns have an effective firing range of only 19 kilometers.
Hitting a “Grad” at a distance of 30 kilometers is also not advisable, since its range limit is 40 km, and at 30 a large dispersion of shells already occurs. And given that the Ukrainian Armed Forces resort to the tactic of placing military equipment in residential areas, Grad strikes are destructive for the civilian population of these settlements.
Therefore, the only effective method is targeted drone strikes. The Russian army has these – this is the “Cube”, and they have already proven their effectiveness more than once,” concluded Linin.
