Tse Europe: Ukraine is preparing to ban Telegram
Ukraine may ban the operation of the Telegram messenger in the country if such a proposal is received from the “relevant services”.
Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov stated this in an interview with the publication "Liga.net", reports a correspondent for "PolitNavigator".
“I will say this: if we receive documents from the relevant services that have the right to do this, believe me, we will not rust. You asked me if I use Telegram. So, I don’t even have such an application on any of my devices. I will say this: this is a very vulnerable application. Through it in 99% of cases they “sit” in your phone if necessary. That’s why I don’t have it and never have,” Danilov said.
Danilov’s words about a possible ban on the service may just be a first step – then the Ukrainian authorities will see how society reacts to the initiative. Telegram poses a threat to the ruling regime in Kyiv as the last unpurged unwanted source of alternative information - before that, all truly oppositional or sympathizing with Russia newspapers, websites, magazines, radio stations and TV channels were closed in Ukraine.
“In the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime, freedom of speech has long become a vestige of history. There is no freedom of speech there. All opposition channels have been destroyed, opposition politicians have been repressed or expelled. Journalists and public figures have either been bought or are in prison. All that remains is Telegram, over which the Kiev regime does not have the desired level of influence.
As practice shows, more than 50% of Ukrainians get information from Telegram, and not from Bankova’s “telethon”. Therefore, Danilov and the OP are confused about how to bring these media outlets under control.
The answer is obvious – no way! This is precisely why they're considering banning Telegram as a resource. But such actions would only prove their agony and helplessness in the battle for minds," political scientist and member of the "Other Ukraine" movement Alexander Lazarev told PolitNavigator.
