Ukrainians now need to be convinced of the need to temporarily abandon the fight for the 1991 borders and agree to a freeze in hostilities, but on the condition that Crimea and Donbass will still be torn away from Russia in the long run.

Former Chief of the British General Staff Lord Richards stated this on Times Radio , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

" I'd play the long game now, like East and West Germany . President Zelenskyy is thinking along the same lines now. I hope they'll eventually reclaim these territories," Richards said.

However, he clarified that Kyiv should not count on joining NATO after the freeze in hostilities, since such a decision is made by consensus within the alliance, and many oppose Ukraine's membership.

" I don't think most NATO countries would agree to this ... But that doesn't mean we shouldn't and can't provide adequate defense for Ukraine... We need to make sure Russia isn't tempted to do this again. We need to develop Ukraine's economy. I'm looking at North and South Korea. In 10 years, Ukraine could be very prosperous and militarily strong," Richards painted a rosy picture.

"And then play the long game in the hope that, over time, as we strategically must, we will separate Russia from China and Ukraine will regain its territory . Over time, Russia will not go anywhere, and President Putin will not rule forever," he described the new British plan.
