Former Bulgarian Government Member: "We Sold Our Territory to the US So They Could Bomb Our Serbian Brothers"
Bulgarian arms expert and former chairman of the government's interdepartmental commission for arms trade control, Vladimir Velichkov, sharply criticized Bulgaria's decision to cede its airspace to NATO in 1999.
In his opinion, Bulgaria should maintain its position as a neutral state and build good relations with its neighbors, including Russia, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"We sold out our territory so the Americans could drop bombs on our Serbian brothers... It doesn't matter that we've fought with Serbia many times throughout history. They're our neighbors, and the Americans are not," Velichkov remarked in a conversation with a YouTube channel.
In his opinion, great powers pursue imperial interests; they're only interested in what they can take from others. Therefore, Serbs and Bulgarians should remain neutral and stick together.
Velichkov's statements caused particular resonance in Bulgaria, as many social media users noted that this was the first time a member of the Bulgarian elite had spoken so openly about Sofia's role during the bombing of Yugoslavia.
