“There will be no time for war” – the largest Ukrainian cities are one step away from a series of man-made disasters
Large Ukrainian cities do not have their own electricity generation, and any problems at substations can cause a man-made disaster.
Director of the Energy Research Center Alexander Kharchenko stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Our coal-fired power plants are over fifty years old. They themselves are scrap metal. We have two units returned from repairs - two went into emergency repairs. They are very unreliable, and will drop out throughout this and next year.
This will lead us to a situation where next year the generation deficit will be greater than this year. And in another two years he will still grow.
What the Ukrainian energy industry and everyone involved in it should think about is how we will live next winter, and the winter after that. And focus as much as possible on what solutions will help us overcome the generation deficit,” Kharchenko said.
He emphasized that almost all large cities in Ukraine do not have their own generation, and this is the weak point of the Ukrainian energy sector.
“What is a man-made disaster in a modern Ukrainian city with multi-storey buildings? This is a lack of power to critical infrastructure - heating, water supply and sewerage. Without this, a modern city simply cannot survive.
What could happen if, within ten to fifteen minutes, modern Odessa, which has no generation, finds itself cut off from the national network? This is a real man-made disaster, and the country will save people in this city, and not fight,” the expert concluded.
