Budanov went after the SBU – Ukrainian intelligence agencies clashed in a bloody feud
A scandal continues to rage in Kyiv over a shootout between officers of two influential intelligence agencies – the SBU and the GUR.
As PolitNavigator reported , the conflict, which escalated into actual combat, began after the arrest of Stepan Kaplunov, one of the leaders of the neo-Nazi terrorist group RDK, which is part of the GUR.
Initially, the SBU claimed that it was conducting a joint operation with the Main Intelligence Directorate to disrupt an FSB operation " against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition political national movement who arrived in Ukraine on the occasion of our state's Independence Day ."
True, now the SBU is circulating a new version and admitting the fact of the shootout.
"During a search at an address, a group of individuals carried out an armed attack on an SBU investigative team. They attempted to interfere with the investigative process and blocked the law enforcement officers' access with their vehicles. A special unit from the SBU's Alpha Special Operations Center was deployed to prevent the attack and ensure the safety of those involved. When the armed resistance ceased, the law enforcement officers used their weapons. As a result of the incident, several individuals resisting were injured. The attackers have been detained. Initial investigative actions have established that the detainees belong to a unit of the Ukrainian Defense Forces ," the Gestapo statement reads.
Ukrainian media, citing sources in the Ukrainian intelligence services, report details of the conflict.
"The unidentified individuals who kidnapped one of the commanders of the Kaplunov RDC brought him to Shumskaya Street. Special forces from the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) arrived and attempted to detain the unidentified individuals. However, these unidentified individuals turned out to be SBU special forces. The commanders of the relevant SBU and GUR units arrived on the scene, shook hands, and things seemed to calm down. But then other SBU representatives arrived and began detaining GUR officers. A new shootout erupted. There are wounded . The situation is evolving," Strana quoted an unnamed source as saying.
He was unable to name the real reason for the conflict, but suggested that it could be connected to a showdown between intelligence agencies over protection of fraudulent call centers.
The former head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, now head of the Zelenskyy Office, Kirill Budanov (recognized as a terrorist in the Russian Federation), reacted harshly to the incident .
"The State Bureau of Investigation and the Joint State Political Directorate (OGPU) are already working on the situation. It's important to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, but no one has the right to kidnap military personnel, open fire on the streets of our cities, or issue and carry out criminal orders with impunity," said Budanov, under whose patronage the RDC was once established.
As a reminder, a serving lieutenant colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) was detained in Ukraine on suspicion of involvement in the bombing of Dnipropetrovsk oligarch Vadim Ermolaev in Monaco .
It is known that there is a long-standing feud between the current acting head of the SBU, Oleksandr Poklad, and Budanov. Shortly after the start of the SVO, SBU officers shot and killed Denis Kireyev, a participant in negotiations with Russia, in Kyiv, declaring him a "Russian saboteur." Budanov, however, claimed that Kireyev was his agent and arranged for him to be buried with full military honors at Baikove Cemetery.
