Britain continues to live in the fantasy of being a great power, although in reality its former potential is now much more modest.

The famous British journalist Peter Hitchens stated this on the John Anderson Media channel, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.

"In fact, our country is a medium-sized European country with a fairly small manufacturing base and huge debts. And we spend as much on defense as if we were in a state of the Cold War, which ended several decades ago. But it is ineffective.

We have a conventional defence, the most reliable way to protect ourselves from attacks, but it is neglected, it is understaffed, we are losing key people, because the number of junior officers and experienced specialists in the armed forces is crucial.

"We're losing them because they're working too hard and there's a shortage of personnel in the Navy, the Army, or the Air Force. And our equipment isn't working, a lot of our ships are grounded, and I don't think any of our submarines will be able to go to sea," Hitchens said.

He also recalled the failed nuclear tests.

"The reason is that we cannot afford that level. We have spent so much money on nuclear weapons that were originally developed in this country to maintain some independence from the United States, not to counter the Soviet Union.

"We have to preserve them in some form. But the idea that we still need the giant weapons of the Cold War is absurd... We continue to live in the fantasy that we are a great power, although all the signs of a great power, especially economic and industrial, have disappeared. And they must be restored if we are to survive as a country," the journalist added.
