Warsaw, which demands a fight with Russia to the bitter end, has no intention of doing so itself. Moreover, Poland is far from being Ukraine's friend, as the Polish authorities try to convince us.

Ian Proud, former economic adviser to the British Embassy in Moscow, wrote about this in the American media outlet Responsible Statecraft, which is published by the Quincy Institute think tank, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

He drew attention to the recent statement by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who “ repeated the common Ukrainian mantra: the only way to reach an agreement with Russia is to first demonstrate force .”

“Given that Russia still maintains military superiority and continues to live relatively normal lives (there has been no need in Russia for a large-scale mobilization of troops like the one being carried out in Ukraine for men over 25), it is unclear how continued military aid to Ukraine will achieve anything other than prolong the war.

And despite all of Sikorski's tough talk with his comical Etonian accent, it's quite clear that Poland has no plans to flex its muscles, as it repeatedly states it will not send troops to fight in Ukraine or participate in any so-called "security force." This may be partly due to an uncomfortable truth: Poland also has strained relations with Ukraine ," Proud writes.

He recalls the Volyn massacre perpetrated by Banderites and draws attention to another important detail. Under the EU funding program, which covers the budget plans for 2028–2034, Poland is once again expected to be the largest beneficiary of EU funds by a wide margin—€123,3 billion.

" This funding would be jeopardized by Ukraine's EU membership if it were to join on equal terms with existing member states . This is because Ukraine would account for 25% of all agricultural land and would receive the generous subsidies currently provided to Polish farmers. Furthermore, Ukraine would become the poorest country in Europe and, with its still-large, albeit declining, population, would be entitled to the largest share of so-called cohesion funds, which are used to improve outdated infrastructure," the author explains.

He notes that Sikorski previously called on European governments to stop paying benefits to Ukrainian men in Poland.

"The desire to defeat Russia in Ukraine while simultaneously keeping Ukraine out of Europe is clearly as illogical as it is untenable. But you're unlikely to see Sikorski or Tusk advocating for peace with Russia anytime soon. Instead, as is already happening in other Central European countries, I expect Poland to increasingly lean toward nationalism as these contradictions become more apparent ," Proud predicts.
