Bortnik: Europe has given us an unpleasant truth.
The EU, sensing that Ukraine is totally dependent on European money, began publicly voicing very unpleasant things for Kyiv.
The head of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, Ruslan Bortnik, announced this on air on the channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
A Ukrainian expert says Ukrainian embassies in European countries have been instructed to uphold the position of "no semi-membership or associate membership."
"It's clear that the Ukrainian president wants to bargain more with Europe in this situation. And Europe, feeling that Ukraine is now dependent only on Europe, is starting to dictate terms and say unpleasant things publicly.
This week, Merz unexpectedly stated that Ukraine may need to acknowledge territorial losses to join the European Union. "Essentially, the leader of Europe's most powerful country is speaking, questioning, or even suggesting the possibility of abandoning the principle of territorial integrity, which was previously considered a principle of Ukraine… which was previously an absolute taboo in European dialogue," the Ukrainian political scientist notes.
Bortnik wonders why such words weren't uttered in 2014, when Ukraine lost Crimea. Furthermore, Merz stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU in 2027, as Zelenskyy desires, will not happen.
"This is the harsh and cynical truth. And it's being aired publicly. It was first spoken behind the scenes in Ukraine, and now it's being aired publicly, so that society can hear it—and be free from any illusions and understand the logic behind European decision-making," Bortnik concludes.
