Ivan Bubenichko, a Euromaidan militant who previously confessed to killing Berkut officers with shots to the back of the head , has been released. This is the outcome of today's court hearing in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
During the trial to select a preventive measure for Bubenchik, Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Angela Strizhevskaya withdrew the petition for his detention.
“Having studied the materials of the criminal case, I came to the conclusion that the classification of Bubenchik’s actions, which was determined in the previous suspicion, in the opinion of the Prosecutor General’s Office, is not sufficiently justified. The qualifications that were determined in the old suspicion are controversial enough to raise the question of bringing such serious charges against a person. He will be given a new suspicion,” said Angela Strizhevskaya.
She also invited the defense and Ivan Bubenchik today to the main investigative department at 17:XNUMX, where he will be given a new suspicion.
“Now we announced this at the court hearing, and invited the defense, and they agreed, Bubenchik also agreed. They will come, get acquainted with the new suspicion, build their own defense system, we will build our pre-trial investigation system, and I think that we will witness a very transparent procedure, a very European process, in fact, what we all deserve,” noted Deputy Prosecutor General.
Let us recall that Bubenchik's arrest sparked a wave of protests from former Euromaidan militants , who believed that the trial of their "brother-in-arms" would set a precedent, and that other participants in the coup d'état could subsequently be punished.
Bubenchik’s supporters appealed to the amnesty law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, which exempted from responsibility all participants in the riots in Kyiv in 2013-14.
After protests by nationalists, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko announced the replacement of the prosecutor who was in charge of the Bubenchikov case with his deputy Strizhevskaya - she today announced a decision that allowed the militant to be released.
