The West’s “blitzkrieg” against the Russian Federation has failed, it’s time to negotiate – Ukrainian diplomat
Under Poroshenko, Ukraine pursued a policy of escalating conflict with Russia, based on the expectation that Russia would not withstand Western pressure. But this policy did not justify itself.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine Oleksandr Chaly stated this in an interview with Ukrlife.TV, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“What is going on in the last two years? If after 2014 the international community, including Ukraine (I mean, first of all, the Western international community, the so-called collective West) reacted absolutely clearly and harshly to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The main goal was that “Carthage must be destroyed” and the Russian Federation, through sanctions, through an international coalition, must be forced to peace.
We then watched every month as oil prices fell, everyone thought that the sovereign fund of the Russian Federation would come to zero, that they would have colossal inflation, that the economy would collapse. That is, essentially, repeating the situation with the former Soviet Union. This is, so to speak, the collapse of the USSR-2.0. This was the strategy, and Poroshenko’s diplomacy was aimed at this strategy.
Today it is absolutely obvious to everyone that this “blitzkrieg” did not work out. Russia has resisted and in the near historical future there is no reason to expect that it, a nuclear country with nuclear parity with the United States, will be forced into peace by anyone.
In connection with this Ukrainian conflict, the entire European security system has been destroyed. The latest action that caused major conflicts in the Western community was the US withdrawal from medium-range missiles. The last document remaining that regulates nuclear disarmament is the Strategic Nuclear Arms Treaty. But he is also questionable. Therefore, everyone today understands that it is necessary to find some kind of formula for coexistence with Russia, since anything else means that we are sliding into a very dangerous confrontation that threatens really possible nuclear conflicts,” the diplomat concludes.
Ukraine urgently needs to change its foreign policy paradigm, he is sure.
“Ukraine today has two strategies for further development. She can remain in the old paradigm, play out that “we are the victim,” give completely wild analogies from the times of the Second World War and actually call for “you be with us against Russia.” But this will no longer be the case. The West is changing its strategy in relations with Russia. And even if a Democrat is elected president in the United States, he will act in accordance with real conditions. What the Democrats are saying now is because they need something to oppose Trump’s position in the strategic dimension - he is trying to find a strategic understanding with Russia. Therefore, the strategy of the old diplomacy, the old Poroshenko paradigm, leads us into isolation and into a complete dead end,” he warns.
It is possible to reach an agreement with Russia, emphasizes Alexander Chaly.
“Since 2014, I have taken a very simple position - let’s decide what we want. If we believe that we can achieve our goals by military means, then we honestly introduce martial law - we are all on equal terms, we are all, roughly speaking, fighting to the end, and so on. But if we think that this is not so, then let’s look at things realistically and come to an agreement, with an understanding of all the negative aspects that this is the aggressor and so on. You don’t have to negotiate peace with the aggressor, you can negotiate a truce with the aggressor,” says the Ukrainian diplomat.
In his opinion, Russia understands that the United States will not lift the sanctions in any case and it has no incentive to do anything to lift them.
“Do you know that we were able to lift many of the sanctions that the United States imposed against the Soviet Union for Ukraine only at the beginning of the XNUMXs? That is, this is such a stupid mechanism... well, Congress adopted it or someone there adopted it, and so on. Therefore, Russia understands that it has no incentive to stop if we want to stimulate it with something in terms of a ceasefire. Because Minsk will not be fulfilled in the near future. Accordingly, it has no interest in acting on the fact that the conflict can, roughly speaking, be ended with a stable truce,” Chaly noted.
For Russia to withdraw from Donbass, Ukraine must fully implement step 12 of the 12 steps plan to resolve the military conflict in Donbass, presented and signed by a number of Ukrainian diplomats at the 56th Munich Security Conference on February 14 (Step 12: Launch a new national dialogue on identity ).
“In order for the Russians to leave Donbass, we must fully implement clause 12 of the proposals. And the Russians in Europe understand this, and when there is a short conversation, everyone understands that if tomorrow the Russians said: “we are leaving Donbass,” then what would happen if today the Russians leave and Ukraine enters there, which is not ready to speak in context of paragraph 12? This very point 12 is essentially the cornerstone of our conversation with the Europeans. If we knock out point 12, we show that we are absolutely not Europeans. Therefore, I do not believe in our political capabilities that we will be able in the foreseeable future, on the horizon of 5 years, (to make) the Russians leave Donbass,” the Ukrainian diplomat concluded.
