The Istanbul talks in 2022 and 2025 are similar only in terms of the venue, as the situation has changed significantly in the past three years.
Sergei Gorbachev, director of the Institute of CIS Countries in Sevastopol and a candidate of political sciences, expressed this opinion on the air of the First Sevastopol Channel , as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"Comparing the negotiations in Istanbul in 2022 with now isn't entirely correct. In March 2022, the situation was the same: the Ukrainian leadership was in Poland, all the embassies had fled . We were in the Obolon area. Remember the Ukrainian beer? Our special forces were running around there. And in general, in Dnipropetrovsk, the discussion was about what their salaries would be in the Russian administration , how much they would receive in rubles? These are just minor details that characterize what was being thought, what the situation was at the time. Among other things, our thoughts and plans were different, the president stated them from the start. Basically, everything went as it did.
The situation has begun to change, and now it is completely different if you compare our mood, the situation in the world as a whole, the balance of political forces, and what happened on the ground,” he noted.
According to the expert, there is no point in making any predictions, since it is important to start this process , where one way or another "objective circumstances will break the enemy."
"Of course, there won't be any results. It's important that this meeting takes place. Because everything that's happening this year—the fourth year of the Cold War—is aimed at turning the tide . I'm talking about our actions, Moscow's actions," Gorbachev said.
He added that a summit of NATO foreign ministers is taking place in Antalya at the same time , with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio participating.
"I think that this factor will also have an impact. Surely some meetings, conversations with the same Rubio behind the scenes may take place. Maybe Zelensky will sit on a chair somewhere, some questions will be asked. In any case, there will be no specific result. But the fact that it has begun is already good," the expert concluded.
